An often-heard quote from the gardening corner is: "I sprinkled an all-purpose fertilizer on the lawn last week, but somehow it turned completely brown in the winter." The problem with "all-purpose fertilizer"? Whoever fertilizes everything a little bit, usually fertilizes nothing right.
Grass is an extremely nutrient-hungry plant. When you mow it regularly, you massively take away leaf mass – and thus energy. This energy must be given back through fertilizer.
But beware: The lawn plant has completely different needs depending on the season.
N, P, K – The Secret on the Back of the Package
Every lawn fertilizer essentially consists of three main nutrients. On the back of the packaging or in the data sheet, you will always find N-P-K numbers (e.g., 20-5-8). That stands for:
- N = Nitrogen: The Growth Engine. Nitrogen ensures strong width and length growth and gives the grass its deep green color.
- P = Phosphorus: The Root Booster. Phosphorus provides the energy for deep root formation. It is especially important for new seeding.
- K = Potassium: The Immune Defense. Potassium strengthens the cell walls of the plant. It makes grasses resistant to frost, drought, and diseases.
The 3 Pillars of Seasonal Fertilization
Understanding N-P-K clarifies why a single fertilizer ("garden fertilizer") cannot work for the whole year.
1. Spring Fertilization (March / April)
After the cold winter, the grass is weakened and often pale. It now needs a "kickstart" to outgrow the traces of winter and potential moss growth.
- Focus: Nitrogen (N)
- The Numbers: A good spring fertilizer has a combination like 25-5-10.
- Timing: When the soil temperature (attention: not the air temperature!) permanently rises above the 10-degree (50°F) mark, the roots awaken.
2. Summer Fertilization (June / July)
In summer, extreme heat stress is inevitable. Lawn growth naturally slows down. Too much nitrogen would be fatal here (danger of burning); instead, we need to build up drought resistance.
- Focus: Balance & organic components, more potassium.
- The Numbers: Roughly 15-5-15.
- Addition: In summer, organic-mineral fertilizers are ideal as they release nutrients slowly (over weeks) and stimulate soil organisms without burning.
3. Fall Fertilization (October / November)
Probably the most important and most frequently underestimated fertilizing process! In the fall, we slowly slow down growth but prepare the plant for months of frost. If you fertilize a lot of easily soluble nitrogen in the fall, you produce fine, soft leaves that die at the first ground frost and are susceptible to fungal diseases (snow mold).
- Focus: Extreme potassium supply (antifreeze for the cells). Low nitrogen.
- The Numbers: Fall fertilizers usually have a ratio like 10-5-20.
- Timing: Shortly before growth stops entirely at soil temperatures below 8°C (46°F).
Pro-Quality vs. Hardware Store
A kilo of cheap hardware store blue fertilizer costs only a fraction of a professional fertilizer. So why spend more? Cheap fertilizers mostly contain quickly soluble nitrogen. It washes quickly into the groundwater during heavy rain. And even worse: It makes the grass grow rapidly in the first week (you have to mow every 3 days) and after 14 days the effect has already vanished.
Quality fertilizers (slow-release fertilizers) release nitrogen slowly over months through coating technology, exactly when heat and moisture allow it. This prevents the so-called surge growth and saves your back.

How much fertilizer do you need? A difference of 10 grams per square meter often makes the difference between "Perfect" and "Yellow burned".
